20ml / 40ml Jigger

25.00

Commonly referred to as a ‘Japanese Style’ Jigger, This double sided conical measuring tool was patented by Cornelius Dungan of Chicago in 1893.

So where is the link to Japan you may ask? Had it not been for Emperor Meiji’s infatuation with western culture in the late 19th century, much of the tools, recipes and bartending culture that we have come to love, would have been lost during prohibition in the United States.

When prohibition was repealed in 1933, bartending in the US took some time to recover and for decades, the profession was seen merely as a means to an end. However, in Japan bartending culture continued to develop and flourish, taking inspiration from tea ceremonies with an unwavering dedication to perfection.

So, while the conical jigger, the spiraled mixing spoon, the cobbler shaker, and many more of these tools may have originated outside of Japan, they have technically been part of Japanese bartending culture for a longer duration of time than anywhere else in the world.

As countries like Australia and the US enjoy a ‘golden age’ of bartending, it is worth noting that none of what we have come to love would be possible without Japan’s incredible, and continuing influence over our bartending culture.

The smaller size of this jigger works well with our Cascara Shrub, as a short pour goes a long way.
